There is so much hype and information scattered about on ALPR cameras right now, both fact and fiction. The major reason is that they were deployed over the past years quietly without much transparency and community input. Unfortunately, this was not legally required in most cases. There is now backlash and sharply divided camps on their deployment and use. This has prompted a last minute scramble to explain them and offer the transparency, which only causes a further lack of trust. Only now is there a mad scramble to put guardrails in place to regulate them. The issue is that the genie is out of the bottle, and these cameras have already established footprint and become accepted for common use. So, they are here to stay and are only going to become more powerful with more features as time moves forward. Given my 12 years experience actually involved in this business, I want to be a moderate voice of reason to show what has occurred during that time and where we are headed. I aim to provide common knowledge and accepted definitions of what they are capable of, as well as how they have been sold, deployed, and used over the years when few people were watching.

Maintaining access to the information, knowing what to look for, and asking the right questions are critical to maintain public transparency into the future.
